New Website for World Heritage Day
This World Heritage Day, explore the monuments and landscape of Stonehenge and Avebury through the World Heritage Site’s refreshed website.

World Heritage Day is celebrated annually on 18th April. Also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites, the event was established in 1982 by ICOMOS and adopted by UNESCO in 1983.
There are currently 1248 World Heritage Sites globally, with 31 in the UK. World Heritage Day is an opportunity to collectively raise awareness of the diversity and conservation of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.
Stonehenge is the most sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, while Avebury is the largest. Together, alongside many more remarkable monuments, they represent the achievement of communities 5,000 years ago and demonstrate the skilful ability of prehistoric peoples to construct immense structures.
The website is a modern, accessible, and inspiring digital home that reflects the timeless significance of the site while supporting the World Heritage mission to inform, educate, and engage. The refreshed website offers enhanced information and partner links to learn about and explore the World Heritage Site’s monuments, landscape and museum collections, and opportunity to discover how the site is cared for for future generations by the WHS Partnership.
Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites World Heritage Site was one of the first seven sites in the UK to be awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site Designation in November 1986, alongside sites including the Giants Causeway and Ironbridge Gorge. Those that care for and live in the Stonehenge and Avebury landscape will be marking this anniversary with a range of activities 2026 to 2027.
