Please note that works to the B4003 will be commencing from 29 August, with a road closure of the B4003 in place 29 August – 18 September 2023 from its junction with the A4 to its junction with the A4361.

Wiltshire Council are undertaking these works to construct a new layby, repair damage to the verge and other associated works using chalk in keeping to the local environment.

The works correspond to the following policies and actions within the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites World Heritage Site Management Plan (2015):

  • Policy 3c – Maintain and enhance the setting of monuments and sites in the landscape and their interrelationships and astronomical alignments with particular attention given to achieving an appropriate landscape setting for the monuments and the WHS itself
    • Action 37 – Reduce the intrusion of the B4003 and traffic on the West Kennet Avenue. Halt road-edge erosion of scheduled areas and manage parking
  • Policy 6a – Identify and implement measures to reduce the negative impacts of roads, traffic and parking on the WHS and to improve road safety and the ease and confidence with which residents and visitors can explore the WHS
    • Action 138 – Review, develop and consult on measures for the B4003 identified in the Avebury WHS Transport Strategy to prevent damage from traffic to the West Kennet Avenue and facilitate movement of visitors within the WHS. Implement agreed outcomes
